In no particular order, here’s a look at these gigantic casinos dotted around the world, but mostly found off the coast of mainland China!
Overlooking the waterways that divide the Italian municipality of Campione and Switzerland, Casinò di Campione is easily the largest casino in Europe. The iconic venue offers some 590,000 square feet of gaming space spread across nine floors. The casino is so big and popular that its forced closure in 2018 obliterated the local economy.
Luckily, the 1917-founded casino reopened its doors in 2022 once the closure was overturned by the Council of State. Designed by Mario Botta, the casino is itself a famous landmark that lights up the Lugano waterfront each night. Within its walls, you’ll find over 500 slots, traditional games of French roulette, and other popular table games from around the world, like Fair Roulette, blackjack, Punto Banco, and Russian Poker.
The first of many trips to Macau on this list of the biggest casinos in the world, The Venetian Macao is the prime example of US companies known for their Sin City establishments sensing a gold rush to the south of China. In 2007, Las Vegas Sands opened The Venetian Macao with a massive 546,000 square feet of gaming space.
With a total floor space of 10,5 million square feet across the casino, entertainment hall, hotel, and other sections, the 39-story Cotai Strip resident stands as the tenth-largest building in the world. As is often the case in Macau, baccarat is a huge draw, particularly because the casino features Commission Free Baccarat. Also in The Venetian Macao are games of Banking Three Card Baccarat, blackjack, Sands Stud Poker, craps, roulette, Sic Bo, and slots.
The WinStar World Casino in the US town of Thackerville, Oklahoma, is the biggest casino in the world. It boasts an entire span of 630,000 square feet, 600,000 square feet of which are dedicated to the casino. Owned and run by the Chickasaw Nation near the state line with Texas, the venue is much more than just a huge casino.
Opened in 2003, there has always been a focus on great games, which is why there are nine gaming plazas hosting over 100 table games, 10,000 electronic gaming terminals, and a 55-table poker room. Away from the gambling, you can stay at the hotel, visit the spa, catch a live show, play some golf, or enjoy one of over 20 bars and restaurants.
Nestled along the banks of the Thames River in Uncasville, Connecticut, stands the magnificent Mohegan Sun. Not quite the size of its nearby rival Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun boasts 364,000 sq ft of entertainment, hotel, and casino action. Owned, operated, and situated on the lands of the Mohegan Tribe, the Mohegan Sun opened in 1996, offering New Englanders and tourists a new and massive gambling destination.
The Mohegan Sun features nearly 4,000 slot machines, 300 casino table games, a dedicated poker room, and state-of-the-art race book. Beyond gambling, this resort shines with over 40 dining options, more than 1,500 hotel rooms with suites, a comedy club, and features a 10,000-seat sporting and concert venue, the Mohegan Sun Arena. But perhaps most notably, the Mohegan Sun is home to the Casino in the Sky. As the world’s largest planetarium dome, this 119,000 sq ft space features a sun, star, and moon light show while gamblings take on casino action like blackjack and roulette, slots, nightlife, and stunning lounges amongst features like Taughannick Falls, a 55 ft high indoor waterfall, Wombi Rock, and the River Blue glass sculpture.
Back to Macau for another monstrous casino resort run by an American company! MGM Cotai boasts a 2,000-seat theatre, a massive hotel, a spa, and a diverse array of restaurants. Found in the casino hotspot of Cotai, not only is the MGM venue one of the biggest casinos in the world with around 500,000 square feet of gaming space, but it also features Nature’s Art, the world’s largest art garden.
After such a successful opening in 2018, MGM Cotai expanded its hotel options from around 400 rooms to nearly 1,400 rooms, and even more are said to be planned. As for casino gaming, you’ll find over 700 slot machines and an assortment of popular Western and Eastern tables. You’ll find classics like roulette and craps surrounded by the likes of Commission Free Baccarat and Sic Bo.
City of Dreams is one of the mega-casinos situated in Macau that’s owned by a more local company, Melco Resorts & Entertainment of Hong Kong. It has stood by the South China Sea since June 2009.
Spanning the colossal 420,000-square-foot property are three casinos, some 30 restaurants, a bunch of retail stores, and over 2,200 hotel rooms spread across five towers. Across City of Dreams’ three casinos, you’ll find over 900 slots, roulette, craps, blackjack, and baccarat.
Wynn Resorts Limited first broke into Macau in 2006 with a 273,000-square-foot casino called Wynn Macao down in Sé. Ten years later, it was clear that Cotai was the place to be, and so came Wynn Palace. The 420,000-square-foot casino space hosts three-card poker, slots, Sic Bo, and baccarat.
Wynn Palace tops the size charts for its spa, which is the largest in the world. The massive Performance Lake, Preston Bailey’s hefty floral displays, and the pool on site certainly don’t fall into the category of ‘small’ either.
Headquartered in Hong Kong, Galaxy Entertainment Group boasts two casinos in Cotai and another four on the Macau Peninsula. The one that ranks among the biggest casinos in the world is the 2011-opened Galaxy Macau.
Designed by American developer Gary Goddard, you’ll find five different themed hotels, six gold-covered cupolas atop the main buildings, and an epic cinema space on the grounds. Galaxy Macau features some 550,000 square feet for its 1,200 slots, Commission Free Baccarat, roulette, craps, and other casino classics.
Known as The Londoner Macao since 2021, with a complete redesign finished in 2023 to fit this new theme, the once Sands Cotai Central first opened on the Cotai Strip in 2012. The 420,000-square-foot venue is one of many Macau casinos owned and operated by Las Vegas Sands, costing the company $4 billion initially for its construction.
Going all-in on its British theme, there are now Suites by David Beckham, an exclusive stylized club for hotel guests, a Crystal Palace atrium, and a life-sized Big Ben. Plus, the casino has all of the tables you’d expect and over 600 slots.
Moving away from the South China Sea to the hotel and casino complex of Foxwoods Resort Casino in Ledyard, Connecticut, there are six casinos dotted around the 9-million-square-foot resort.
These gaming halls amount to 340,000 square feet of gambling space, which comes with nearly 300 tables of classic games and over 5,000 slots! Owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, you can also enjoy the famed Tanger Outlet Mall here.
While at the top of the biggest casinos in the world, the Tusk Rio Casino Resort is certainly among the biggest casinos in the Southern Hemisphere, boasting 266,000 square feet for gaming. At the hotel, casino, and convention resort in Klerksdorp, South Africa, you can stay at a luxury three-star hotel and dine at three highly-rated restaurants and café rooms.
