In 2024, Cup Of America returns to the US with a tweaked format that essentially makes it a North and South American tournament. Thanks to a new collaboration between CONCACAF and CONMEBOL, this edition of the competition has opened up from its usual one or two guest team spots to welcome six CONCACAF teams.
It’s this change that has led to Canada competing in its first-ever Cup Of America in 2024. However, the draw has not been kind to the northernmost team in the tournament, giving CANMNT a slim hope of making it out of Group A. Regardless, it’s set to be quite the spectacle, and Canada still has a puncher’s chance.
Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming Cup Of America that will, uniquely, be taking place outside of South America.
Cup Of America 2024 begins on June 20 and ends with the final on July 14. During this time, 16 teams from two confederations will battle it out in 14 cities in the US. Those 14 stadiums are situated in ten states: Florida, Kansas, Missouri, Nevada, Arizona, California, Texas, New Jersey, North Carolina, and Georgia.
Cup Of America returns in 2024, but in a rather unique form. Over its extensive history, only once has the tournament for South America’s soccer federations taken place outside of CONMEBOL’s jurisdiction. This was back in 2016 when the United States played host.
In 2024, it returns to the US and brings in six invitees from CONCACAF rather than the usual one or two invitees from anywhere in the world. The list of previous invitees includes Japan, Mexico, and Qatar. That said, Canada will be the only debutant this year.
The two biggest stadiums set to host Cup Of America are the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey (82,566 capacity) and the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas (80,000 capacity). The final will take place at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida (64,767 capacity).
Canada will make its Cup Of America debut in 2024. The national team wasn’t simply invited as others like the US, Panama, and Haiti have been in the past, rather, Canada had to qualify.
Canada has been on the rise over the past five years, finally making it to their second FIFA World Cup in 2022, a feat that ended a 36-year absence (since 1986) in the biggest single-sport event on the planet. In 2026 they’ll be at the World Cup again, coming in as hosts. Most recently the team finished second in the CONCACAF Nations League and now, CANMNT is going to Cup Of America.
With the United States taking on hosting duties and CONCACAF and CONMEBOL starting a new strategic partnership, the chance for Canada to qualify for their first Cup Of America presented itself. Canada jumped at the opportunity.
Qualification was more difficult than expected for Canada. Along with the US, Costa Rica, and Mexico, Canada was given a bye for the League Phase. In the quarter-finals, Canada lost to Jamaica on away goals in a 4-4 tie over two legs. Their last chance to qualify was a one-game play-off against Trinidad and Tobago, which Canada won 2-0 in Frisco, Texas.
Arguably, Canada boasts its best-ever men’s national soccer team, with truly world-class stars playing for major teams in Europe. Here are the ones to watch as we take a look at how Canada will look to play at Cup Of America 2024.
Canada has three players who can be pointed as true elite-class stars. Chief among these is Alphonso Davies. The Bayern Munich left-back continues to showcase his incredible speed, athleticism, and crossing ability for the German giants and even added his first UEFA Champions League goal this season, netting the go-ahead goal against Real Madrid in the semi-finals.
This season, Jonathan David has once again established himself as one of Ligue 1’s top strikers. For LOSC Lille, he matched his 26-goal tally of last season and added even more assists, bumping from four to nine. Then, there’s FC Porto’s central midfielder Stephen Eustáquio. For most of the season he was a regular starter, but was rotated a lot towards the end of the campaign.
On May 13, 2024, former Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch was announced as the new boss. At this stage, we don’t know how Marsch will set up his CANMNT, but he does have key pieces who can likely allow him to replicate a similar formation and tactics to his time at Leeds. With Leeds, the default formation was 4-2-3-1, which would sometimes flip to a more attacking 4-1-3-2.
Wingers would drift inwards to let the full-backs roam the length of the pitch, which Davies will certainly be relied on to do for Marsch’s Canada. The American coach is all about moving the ball forward swiftly, directly, and on the ground, which means that Eustáquio will be looking to thread balls to David through the backline.
The Canadian men’s national team is at its strongest going forward, with speedy wingers in Cyle Larin and Tajon Buchanan offering ample punch from outside the box and David being a superb striker. Canada is also well-suited to moving the ball up the pitch thanks to its selection of crafty, high-effort central midfielders and the tireless efforts of its full-backs. Davies headlines and can be deployed anywhere, but Alistair Johnston certainly isn’t a slouch.
Canada’s weaknesses come along the backline. Kamal Miller, Dereck Cornelius, Joel Waterman, Moïse Bombito, and Richie Laryea are all fine players at their level (all MLS bar Cornelius, who’s in the Swedish Allsvenskan), but the leap to the international stage has been visibly trying in recent years. With Marsch’s style relying on a strong backline that can push the play forward, the backline looks to be the clear weak spot.
Canada has been drawn into Group A, which looks to be a particularly menacing one.
Facing off against the reigning Cup Of America and World Cup champions, this is a trial by fire to open up the whole tournament at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. It kicks off at 8 pm ET.
Next is a game that Canada is favoured to win. CANMNT will go to Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas to battle Peru in front of up to 18,467 fans at 4 pm ET.
To round out Group A, Canada will face off against Chile at the Inter&Co Stadium in Orlando, Florida. Chile will likely need a win to confirm their place in the knockout stages, so the 8 pm ET kickoff looks to be a spicy one.

As Cup Of America approaches, the outright favourites are Argentina at +175. Next up is Brazil at +225, who Argentina could meet in the final of the Cup Of America. However, on Brazil’s side of the bracket are two other favourites in Uruguay (+500) and Colombia (+1200). Argentina’s top competitor on their side, per the odds, is Mexico (+1400).
Canada’s Cup Of America odds don’t make for pretty viewing. CANMNT sits out at +6600 to raise the trophy and +1400 to win Group A.
Sitting atop the FIFA World Rankings as the South American and World Champs, Argentina are the natural picks as Cup Of America 2024 favourites. Lionel Messi is a slight doubt at the time of writing, currently saddled with another injury but, even without their talisman, Argentina boasts a mighty group of world-class players including Lautaro Martínez, Julián Álvarez, Alexis Mac Allister, Rodrigo de Paul, Emiliano Martínez, and Cristian Romero.
Brazil, Argentina’s arch nemesis, weighs in as the second-favourite. They boast an overly stuffed attacking corps of Vinícius Júnior, Rodrygo, Gabriel Martinelli, Evanilson, and Endrick – and they could even call upon Richarlison and Gabriel Jesus. There’s also the choice between two world-class goalies (Ederson and Alisson), an aggressive midfield headlined by Bruno Guimarães, and plenty of top-tier defenders to rely on.
Importantly, if both teams make it out of their respective groups in first or second, they wouldn’t meet one another until the Cup Of America Final. The two met in the 2021 final with Argentina coming out on top, winning 1-0.
Behind these two South American heavyweights are two dark horse contenders, certainly worth considering for bettors. Uruguay has been transformed under Marcelo Bielsa and his infamous “Bielsa-Ball”, which has allowed them to beat Argentina and Brazil in World Cup Qualifiers. Colombia is perhaps even more impressive, having gone undefeated in 18 games under Néstor Lorenzo, which includes a tie with Uruguay and wins against Brazil, Spain, Mexico (twice), Germany, and Japan.
Coming in from CONCACAF, Mexico and the United States are the top picks. The USMNT recently climbed to 11th in FIFA rankings, but have been drawn into a group with Uruguay and a bracket that could also feature Brazil and Colombia. Mexico has drawn a winnable group and sits 14th in the rankings, but could face Argentina in the quarter-finals or semi-finals.
The Cup Of America isn’t an annual tournament; it is generally classified as a quadrennial event. Like most other continental international soccer competitions, it typically has a four-year gap between tournaments, although this schedule was only upheld from 1975 to 1987. Since then, it’s generally taken place every two or three years.
Cup Of America 2024 is taking place across the United States, predominantly in the southern states. The stadiums are in Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, New Jersey, California, Arizona, Nevada, Missouri, Kansas, and Florida.
Canada is going to play in this summer’s Cup Of America 2024 tournament. CANMNT qualified for the tournament by losing to Jamaica in the quarter-finals of the play-offs and then beating Trinidad and Tobago 2-0 in the decisive play-off match.
Neymar will not play at Cup Of America 2024. Neymar tore his ACL and meniscus in October 2023 and following surgery was confirmed to be out of Cup Of America 2024 contention.
The winning team of Cup Of America 2024 is said to get a cash drop of $10 million in prize money, with another $13 million distributed across the other competing teams.
On the host rotation of Cup Of America, Ecuador should have been the next host. In late 2022 however, the president of the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) announced that the country is “not able to organize the Cup Of America.”
Cup Of America 2024 tickets currently range from around $34 for a Group Stage game – this one being Peru vs Canada on June 25 at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City – up to around $590 for tickets to the Cup Of America Final at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.
Lionel Messi might play at Cup Of America 2024. The Argentinean Captain did look set to play at Cup Of America 2024 as he returned to play for Inter Miami after an injury, but on May 11, he picked up a knee injury against CF Montréal. So, there is some doubt as to whether Messi will play at Cup Of America 2024.
Argentina are the outright favourites to win Cup Of America 2024 at odds of +175. Argentina is followed by Brazil at +225 and Uruguay at +500 .
