Staged in Qatar, the 2022 World Cup was the last version of the international soccer tournament. It was the first time that the competition had been held in the Middle East, and due to temperatures being too hot during the summer months, it was played during the winter in the northern hemisphere.
Argentina won the 2022 World Cup after beating France in a thrilling final. The game finished 2-2 after 90 minutes. Both teams scored during extra-time, which meant the final went to penalties. The South American country prevailed 4-2 in the shootout.
Frenchman Kylian Mbappe was the highest goalscorer with eight goals during the tournament, including a hat-trick in the final. The best player award went to Argentina captain Lionel Messi who helped his country to their second success at the World Cup. Messi is considered one of the greatest players of all time and this was the first time he has lifted the trophy in his career.
Canada, Mexico, and the United States have been named as co-hosts for the 2026 World Cup. Each of those teams will receive automatic qualification into the finals so they will not need to qualify.
There is a total of 16 different cities that will be used across the three countries at the 2026 World Cup, with the United States set to host all the knockout games from the quarterfinals onwards, including the final.
It will be the first time the United States has hosted a World Cup since 1994. Mexico will be one of the hosts for the third time, with the last time the World Cup was on Mexican soil being back in 1986. Canada is set to be one of the hosts for the first time in their history.
Toronto’s BMO Field and Vancouver’s BC Place are the two stadiums set to be used in Canada for the 2026 World Cup. Those two venues host MLS fixtures and they have also held international matches for the Canadian national football team.
In Mexico, three different stadiums will host matches at the tournament. The biggest is the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, which has a capacity of 87,523. Monterrey’s Estadio BBVA and Guadalajara’s Estadio Akron will also have games held at their venues.
With 11 stadiums set to be used for the 2026 World Cup, most of the matches will be played in the United States. The MetLife Stadium (New York/New Jersey), AT&T Stadium (Dallas), Arrowhead Stadium (Kansas City), NRG Stadium (Houston), Mercedes-Benz Stadium (Atalanta), SoFi Stadium (Los Angeles), Lincoln Financial Field (Philadelphia), Lumen Field (Seattle), Levi’s Stadium (San Francisco), Gillette Stadium (Boston), and Hard Rock Stadium (Miami) will all host matches.
The 2026 World Cup will run from June 8th to July 3rd, 2026. With the expansion from 32 teams to 48 teams, there will be a total of 80 matches, the most ever at a World Cup before. Teams have already begun their qualifying campaign to try and book their place at the tournament.
Once the draw is made, the teams involved in the opening game on June 8th will be announced. Traditionally, one of the host nations kicks off the tournament in front of their home supporters.
FIFA has yet to announce which stadium will host the final on July 3rd, 2026. This game attracts a huge global audience, as soccer fans across the world turn in to see which team lifts the trophy.

Here is a look at some of the betting lines available in World Cup betting here at LeoVegas:
If you want to bet on the matches at the 2026 World Cup, whether that be during the group stage or the knockouts, the moneyline market will interest you. Odds are offered for Team A, Team B, and the draw. It is worth noting that during the knockout stages, you will be betting on the 90 minutes, so if the game ends in a tie, and goes into extra time, the draw is the winning selection here.
Outright betting on the 2026 World Cup is a market on who will win the tournament. This is settled by the official result with FIFA. It does not matter how the team wins the final (90 minutes, extra-time, or penalties), if they lift the trophy, they are the winners in this market.
You can bet on the outright market either win or each way in our World Cup betting. With the latter, your place terms are ½ 1-2 with LeoVegas. That means if the team you back reach the final, you will pick up a guaranteed payout.
There is a range of player markets you can bet on in our World Cup betting. One of the most popular is the Player of the Tournament. This is an award that is handed out by FIFA to the player who had the biggest impact during the competition.
The top goalscorer at the World Cup is another market that many punters enjoy betting on. As you would expect, the forwards for the leading contenders for the trophy tend to be at the top end of the betting for this prize.
As well as outright player markets, you can find an array of player markets for each game at the World Cup. In the goalscoring section of our page, you can bet on a player to score the first goal, score at any time during the 90 minutes, and score a hat-trick during the game. There are also markets that allow you to bet on a specific player to pick up a booking or a red card in that match.
There will be certain markets in our World Cup betting where you will see an over/line. For example, we may offer odds on there being over or under 2.5 goals in a game. In this market, because there is a 0.5 at the end of the number, there are only two possible outcomes, which takes away the possibility of a tie.
As well as goals, over/under markets are offered on the number of corners, bookings, and the time the opening goal is scored.
Asian lines is a form of handicap betting offered on football. You will find Asian lines on all the matches at the 2026 World Cup. In Asian Lines, one of the two teams is given a virtual head start before the game begins. You then need to decide which of the two teams to back with this handicap in mind.
The way that Asian Line differentiates itself from a standard handicap market is that there cannot be a draw. There are only two possible outcomes, which is why many bettors prefer placing a bet in this market.
The 2026 World Cup takes place in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. The co-hosts will split the 80 matches in the tournament. From the quarterfinals onwards, each match will take place in the United States, including the final.
Canada is +10000 to win the 2026 World Cup. They are considered outsiders for the tournament in our World Cup betting. It will be their second consecutive appearance at the finals, as they featured at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar where they were eliminated in the group stages.
The 2026 World Cup starts on June 8th. It continues through to the final on July 16th.
Brazil and France are the +375 joint favourites here at LeoVegas to win the World Cup 2026.
