Casino Guide to Caesars Windsor Hotel and Casino

Caesars Windsor Guide

Due to a quirk of geography, Windsor, Canada, is actually south of the US state of Michigan. It’s situated just a few hundred metres across the river from Detroit.

Although it may be on the small side for a city, housing just over 200,000 people, Windsor holds a similar place in history to the neighbouring Michigan capital, Detroit. Windsor and the Motor City are known for their automotive industries.

Windsor is also home to one of the Caesars brand casinos. Caesars Windsor Hotel and Casino sits on the riverfront within reach of the Detroit/Windsor Tunnel. It was the first casino in the area, attracting players from Canada and the US.

Today, visitors to Caesars Windsor can play nearly 2,000 slot games and participate in weekly poker tournaments. The franchise-wide Caesars Rewards card is valid here, too.

History and Background

Origins of Caesars Windsor

Opened in 1994, Caesars Windsor Hotel and Casino didn't get an official home until four years later. In fact, visitors sometimes had to play on the Northern Belle riverboat due to the then-Casino Windsor's expansive crowds. It celebrated its 30th birthday in 2024, and Caesars Windsor Hotel and Casino remains the only casino in the city.

Caesars Windsor owes its existence to local politician Dave Cooke, who persuaded some of his peers to support a casino project in the early 1990s. Once approved, Casino Windsor operated out of the Art Gallery of Windsor until it found a permanent place in 1998.

By 2008, the casino had added several new properties, including a hotel and entertainment venue called The Colosseum. This expansion took the site's footprint across McDougall St. to the west.

A CBC article celebrating the casino's recent milestone claims that Caesars Windsor contributes CAD$92.3m to the city's coffers, employing 2,000 people. PR manager Suzanne Tomkins says the operator has given CAD$16m to charity.

In 2023, a sportsbook appeared on site, roughly one year after sports betting regulations were passed in Ontario.
