Casino Regina opened in 1996 and was one of the first legal casinos in the province. Casinos were illegal in Saskatchewan until 1993, when local First Nation tribes illegally opened the Bear Claw Casino, which led to the government legalizing casinos and the establishment of the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA).
Casino Regina is located at the historic Union Station, which was built in 1911 and served as a key railway hub for the Canadian Pacific Railway. The station was designed by architect George W. H. Smith and was a grand example of early 20th-century railway architecture.
