The National Basketball Association (NBA) has been America’s premier basketball league for almost eight decades. It’s created some historic moments, from the first slam dunk to Michael Jordan’s sneakers, Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game and Magic Johnson’s skyhook.
The NBA was formed in 1949 with the merger of two leagues, the NBL and the BAA. Before the NBA, one of America’s most-loved sports had no central organisation to regulate rules and tournaments. The National Basketball League, which launched in 1937, was eventually absorbed into the Basketball Association of America in 1949 to create the NBA as we know it today.
However, many NBA stats and records take their start dates from when the BAA began in 1946.

The National Basketball League, which launched in 1937, was eventually absorbed into the Basketball Association of America in 1949 to create the NBA as we know it today.
However, many NBA stats and records take their start dates from when the BAA began in 1946.
The NBA was originally called the Basketball Association of America (BAA) and it began with just 11 teams in the league. The BBA was founded in New York City on June 6, 1946, and featured both the New York Knicks and Boston Celtics. The Philadelphia Warriors won the inaugural BAA Finals in 1947.
The NBA was founded by team owners primarily in the BAA who came from an ice hockey background. Owners had created the BAA just a few years ago to stage games at ice hockey arenas that were bigger than basketball courts. Businessman and sports executive Walter Brown helped create the BAA and push ahead with the formation of the NBA three years later.
There were 23 core rules of basketball when the NBA launched in 1949. Back then they called successful shots ‘goals’. Here’s a list of those rules
The game is played with a round ball.
The ball can be thrown in any direction with one or both hands, but not the fist
A player is allowed to dribble or bat the ball with their hands. Catching the ball and then passing it is not allowed
The ball must be maintained in or between the hands. Using arms or body for holding it is not permitted
Progression of the ball down the court is accomplished through passing or dribbling
Actions such as shouldering, holding, pushing, tripping, or striking an opponent are strictly prohibited, with the initial infringement counting as a foul. A second offense will result in the offender's disqualification until the next goal is scored. If there is evident intent to cause harm, the offender is disqualified for the entire game, with no substitutes allowed
It is strictly prohibited for any player to commit a foul against another player. A foul is defined as hitting the ball with a fist, violations of rules 2, 3 and 4, and actions described in rule 6
The player who is fouled is required to shoot the free throw
Teams must progress the ball beyond the half-court line within 10 seconds of acquiring possession in the backcourt
A player is disqualified upon committing his fifth personal foul.
A goal is scored when the ball is thrown or batted from the grounds into the basket and remains there, provided that the defenders do not touch or disturb the goal. If the ball rests on the edge and the opponent moves the basket, it shall be considered a goal
From 1896 onwards, field goals were allocated 2 points, and free throws were allocated 1 point
Following a successful score, possession of the ball is transferred to the opposing team
The ball is brought into play from the end line each time
Zone defences are allowed
When the ball is out of bounds, it is thrown back into the field and played by the first individual to touch it. In the event of a dispute, the umpire throws it directly into the field. The thrower is allotted five seconds, any longer results in possession being given to the opponent. Continuous game delay by any side results in a foul being called by the umpire
The umpire serves as the judge of the players, recording fouls and alerting the referee when three consecutive fouls have been made. The umpire possesses the authority to disqualify players as per Rule 6
The referee serves as the judge of the ball, deciding when the ball is in play, in bounds, and to which side it belongs. They are also responsible for keeping time, deciding when a goal has been scored, and keeping track of the goals, along with any other duties typically performed by a referee
The team scoring the highest number of goals within the time limit is declared the winner. In the event of a tie, the game can be extended until another goal is scored upon agreement by the team captains
Each team is composed of five players on court and two substitutes who can be rotated into play twice during the course of the game
Teams are permitted to carry 10 players, with at least 8 dressed for the game
Games are scheduled to last 48 minutes in quarters
Each team is permitted three time-outs
*Note: Basketball was originally two words. These original rules were published Jan. 15, 1892, in the Springfield College school newspaper, The Triangle.
The bulk of the original NBA teams came from the BAA. Below are the 11 original basketball teams to compete in the BAA:
