The second Classic of the weekend sees the fillies take centre stage at The Curragh on Sunday 28th, with 11 runners going to the post for the 2023 Irish 1000 Guineas. This Group 1 encounter over a mile was first run back in 1922, and it is one of the most coveted prizes in the Irish flat racing scene.
In the previous running, it was the Chris Hayes-ridden Homeless Songs who triumphed, preventing the dominant Aiden O'Brien from making it as an unprecedented fourth successive winner in this race. In a dominant display, she took home the €285,000 winning prize by an impressive 5 1/2 lengths from two O'Brien runners, Tuesday and Concert Hall in second and third respectively.

Tahiyra is the daughter of serial Classic winner Siyouni and comes from a pedigree that makes her impossible to ignore. She made just two starts as a two-year-old but made an incredible impression despite being so lightly raced. She won handsomely on debut at the Galway Festival and then romped to Group 1 success in the Moyglare Stud Stakes here at the Curragh. If she can continue that form here, she could be the one to beat and is likely to go off a short odds-on favourite. She was surprisingly beaten by Mawj at the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket last month despite leading the betting and will be looking to bounce back with a popular win for the punters here.
Like most Classics in Ireland and elsewhere, this is a race that has been dominated by Aiden O'Brien down the years. He has saddled the winner ten times, including triumphing in five of the last ten runnings. His leading light to add to the tally this year is Meditate. Her most impressive showing to date was a dominant win in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Keeneland in November. This was the first time she had covered the full mile distance before, and it will be fascinating to see how she performs among these fantastic fillies.
Another Aiden O'Brien charge who is in with a shout is Never Ending Story. Her chances increased emphatically after an excellent win in the 1000 Guineas Trials at Leopardstown in April. She beat what looked on paper to be a competitive field to claim the victory by a comfortable 2 1/2 lengths. She won well at Group 3 level as a two-year-old and performed admirably at Group 1 level when tested. After her great start to this campaign, are we about to see another successful chapter in the career of the Never Ending Story?
Yet another O'Brien runner with a fighting chance is Jackie Oh. She narrowly missed out on the prestigious Salsabil Stakes at Navan a month ago and has been added to the race at a later stage. Daughter of Jacqueline Quest and from the legendary stock of Rock Of Gibraltar, she comes with quite a bit of expectation. She has a win and second place from her two runs in this debut season and will have her fanciers in the betting here.
Having won the race last year, Dermot Weld will fancy his chances of a repeat success with the favourite Tahiyra and another with a fighting chance in the form of Tarawa. With all the attention going to her illustrious stable mate there is the chance that Tarawa could go under the radar here. After a fifth-place finish on debut, she claimed a brilliant follow-up win at Leopardstown on her final race as a two-year-old. She readied herself for this race with a decent second-placed finish at the same track in the Group 3 Cornelscourt Stakes.
The classy horse in this race is Tahiyra, but doubts remain about how lightly she has been run to date to justify such a short price. There are some very impressive horses for her to beat here, and the value is to be had further down the betting. Given the fact connections have stumped up €50,000 to get her to the start line here, you would have to be confident that Jackie Oh could be due for a big race performance.
