Match Prediction: Slovenia vs Serbia UEFA European Championship 2024

This might be considered the most important match of group C for these two nations. Denmark and England are games where points will be hard to come by, so to stand any chance of qualifying, these teams will probably feel that winning this match is imperative.

Consequently, we expect to see a very tight game, with both sets of players knowing that a mistake could prove costly. If one side were to walk away with three points, their chances of reaching the last 16 will increase dramatically.

How did they qualify?

Slovenia impressed in qualifying, picking up 22 points from a possible 30. In a group that included Denmark and Finland and some weaker teams like Northern Ireland and whipping boys San Marino, it was clear that the games versus the top seeds were going to be crucial, and this proved to be precisely the case. Finishing four points above third-placed Finland ensured their place in the Euros 2024.

Serbia also finished second in its group, three points ahead of third-placed Montenegro. Overall, their performances weren't that impressive. Fortunately, the teams around them kept dropping points; otherwise, their place in this competition would have been very much in doubt. Their performances will have to improve substantially to advance to the last 16.

Team Analysis

Serbia looks stronger on paper; however, recent performances suggest that Slovenia is a better team. Serbia possesses some names European football fans will be familiar with, but they have an ageing squad, and the desire to play all of their star footballers might be hampering the side's fluency.

Slovenia will likely play in a 4-4-2 formation, which is ideal since the team's most notable players are its strikers. There will not be anything revolutionary from this side. They will be set up pragmatically and looking to win this game by the odd goal.

Players to watch

As alluded to, this Serbian side has some household names. They do rely heavily on their main man upfront, though, and one feels that for them to go far in this tournament, he will need to be on top form.

- Aleksander Mitrovic: This former Fulham man now plays in the Saudi Arabian league. He is still Serbia's most likely chance of a goal and It will be interesting to see if he has lost any of his edge since we last saw him play in the Premier League

Slovenia has some promising young players who could make a real mark in this tournament. However, we have decided to highlight the presence of one of this generation's great goalkeepers.

- Jan Oblak: When you are playing in a major tournament, experience is key, which is why we think the Atletico stalwart between the sticks will have such a big part to play during this tournament

Prediction

Slovenia has impressed us recently. We can all admit they aren't the best football team in the world, full of superstars, but they are well-organised, and this is why we are giving them a slight edge over Serbia. As mentioned, Serbia probably has the better team on paper, but they are not playing well enough for anyone to back them confidently.
