For many, this is when the tournament really begins. The group stages did throw up some dramatic games, but because 16 of the 24 nations playing in this tournament qualify for this stage, we have yet to see much jeopardy for the top nations involved.

If you revisit our match previews for the group stages, you'll recall our early prediction of Romania as a potential dark horse for this year's tournament. This was a bold call, especially when few others were making it. Initially, we highlighted the team's defensive prowess, but their unexpected attacking flair has genuinely surprised us. It's worth noting that all four teams in their group were formidable, yet Romania scored four goals and conceded only three, securing the top spot.
When Austria were paired against France, the Netherlands, and Poland, they knew qualification wouldn't be easy. Finishing top of their group with six points was an excellent achievement, and their celebrations after the final whistle against the Dutch said it all. They lost their first game by one goal to France, but despite that, many could see the fighting spirit in the team. After their poor luck in the first game, Austria were able to bounce back and managed to win their next two games to top the group featuring such strong sides.
