Which League of Ireland Premier Division club and stadium earn the highest praise for their passionate 'twelfth man' on matchdays?
Football in Ireland is more than just a game; it's a vibrant celebration of community, passion, and tradition. In full voice, crowds bring their unmatched energy and unwavering support to stadiums across the top flight, creating a raucous atmosphere that echoes long after the final whistle.
According to a recent study by LeoVegas, which analysed Google reviews of each 2024 League of Ireland Premier Division stadium referring to positive atmosphere comments on matchdays, the most 'electric' has been ranked by percentage relative to the total number of reviews.
With the season now concluded, LeoVegas' research has revealed that the home ground of St Patrick's Athletic takes the top spot. Richmond Park, nestled in the heart of Inchicore, edges Bohemians' Dalymount Park to glory, with 6.92% of its reviews highlighting the atmosphere in a positive light; 38 out of 549 individuals were eager to express awe in the quality of this aspect of the matchday experience.
One user shared their thoughts on Richmond Park after witnessing league action: "Best stadium for atmosphere in the League of Ireland. Love how close the spectators are to the pitch. A special place."
Another reviewer said: "The Shed End Invincibles are the "ultra" group associated with the team. They no doubt bring a great atmosphere to the ground, always having some sort of fan display on show.
"They really play a big part in making a trip to Richmond a highlight, for me at least."
Even with the ground being open to weather conditions, which can play foul to the state of play, it still doesn't affect the mood in the crowd, according to a further comment made by a Google reviewer, "A very wet night but the atmosphere was electric!"
Dalymount Park, known as the "Home of Irish Football," comes in second. Despite its ageing infrastructure, the historic ground continues to evoke strong emotions from fans who appreciate its storied past and present.
"Old stadium full of character, quite run down and due a total revamp in the near future, but there is always a terrific atmosphere on match nights." a reviewer stated.
Drogheda United's United Park ranks third (6.19%), with its compact setting amplifying fan energy despite possessing the smallest capacity in the division.
Meanwhile, Shelbourne's Tolka Park lands in fourth (4.64%). Its old-school charm will continue to captivate for many years to come after the recently crowned champions' long-term future on their home patch was retained back in May.
Tallaght Stadium, home to Shamrock Rovers, ranks fifth, with 4.24% of reviews praising its matchday atmosphere. While its modern facilities and large crowds impress, the sheer volume of reviews (1,886) slightly dilutes its score.
Derry City's Brandywell (4.04%), Galway United's Eamonn Deacy Park (3.65%), and Dundalk's Oriel Park (2.29%) reflect smaller but dedicated fan bases. Waterford FC's RSC (1.94%) and Sligo Rovers' Showgrounds (1.55%) round out the list, though these rankings may reflect fewer online reviews rather than a lack of passion from the fans.
