The Cork Derby is a handicap race that will be run on Friday June 16 at Cork over 1m 4f on the turf at 19:10.
With plenty of prize money on offer, the 2023 edition has attracted a high level of entries and will feature 14 runners.
Let’s start by looking at the recent winners, before moving onto the list of 14 runners for the 2023 edition, eventually wrapping things up with some Cork Derby 2023 betting tips.
This race has seen some big-priced winners in recent years with Rayonpour winning in 2020 at Cork Derby odds of 16/1.
Two years ago, in 2021 it was one for favourite-backers with Morph Speed beating fellow joint-favourite Federica Sophia over the last furling to take the spoils at 7/2.
But last year it was back to a big-priced winner with 8/1 chance Hell Bent making it all and winning with relative ease, 11/4 favourite Safecracker the next home.
There’s no return for Hell Bent in 2023 but recent winner of this race Morph Speed is in the field again and will be looking to make it two wins in this race; Morph Speed is expected to go off at Cork Derby betting odds of 8/1 (9.0).
Last year’s runner-up Safecracker is also in the field and expected to have a Starting Price at around the 7/1 (8/0) mark.

If you place a bet on any horse after 10am on the day of the race and it goes on to win, you’ll have great odds on it. If you backed Old Port at 14/1 at midday and its Starting Price was 16/1 and it went on to win, you’d be paid out at 16/1.
If you backed Old Port at 14/1 at midday and its Starting Price was 12/1 before it went on to win, you’d be paid out at the odds available when you backed it, in this case 14/1.
Betting tip #1: Star Kissed
Jockey: CT Keane
Trainer: GM Lyons
Star Kissed is pretty new to handicaps but came good on her second attempt in them after winning a 10-runner handicap at Roscommon as a 9/4 shot just 15 days ago.
The grey filly has an official rating of 84 and has won two of her three races this year, also winning at Bellewstown back in April and justifying her short price of 8/13.
That Roscommon win will cost her a 5lb higher mark this time round, but she looks to be constantly improving and will benefit from having the experienced head of Colin Keane on board, who has an excellent record here at Cork.
Should go off as the favourite at around the 9/2 mark but then again, that’s for good reason.
Betting tip #2: Safecracker
Jockey: Ben Coen
Trainer: JP Murtagh
We mentioned Safecracker already as the runner-up last year, the favourite from 2022 losing out to 8/1 chance Hell Bent.
Safecracker is back for another shot at this and comes here on the back of a very respectable effort last time out, when seventh of 15in a handicap at the Curragh over 10f just 20 days ago. Ridden out 2f out, he kept on and will surely appreciate the step back up in trip.
Last won in August 2022 at Gowran Park and is trained by Johnny Murtagh, which is a big plus.
The betting forecast has him going off at around the 7/1 mark and based on all evidence, he should go pretty close.
